The most exotic coffee in the world

The Kopi Luwak, denominated as one of the most exotic coffees in the world, surprises all those who do not know its origin.

The most exotic coffee in the world

The civet coffee or Kopi Luwak is a variety of coffee beans best known in some parts of Asia such as Indonesia, the Philippines or Vietnam, not only for its high price, but also for its origin.

Its origin

The civet is a small mammal that feeds on different fruits and grains, mostly coffee beans. The civet frequently ingests the fruit of the coffee plant, and during the digestive process different chemical processes occur with the beans. The coffee beans do not get completely digested and the enzymes of the civets's digestive system manage to break down the proteins of the coffee, reducing its bitterness, its acidity and enhancing its sweet taste.

If you still do not understand what Kopi Luwak is all about, it is basically the coffee bean that passes through the digestive tract of the civets, and when excreted, is collected by farmers, to be washed, roasted and sold for consumption.

In addition to its exotic origin, Kopi Luwak has several reasons for its high price. Only a maximum annual amount of the beans already “processed” by the civets is allowed to be harvested, so the amount of beans offered for sale is limited.

The country of origin is also a relevant factor. The ones produced in Indonesia are one of the most sold due to its flavor, while other countries such as Vietnam also produce them, but without achieving the same flavor, due to the variety of coffee beans originating in the area.

Attempts have even been made to replicate the digestive process in “laboratories”, but the result has not been entirely similar to the original.

It should be noted that the coffee bean, after being excreted, is duly cleaned, roasted and packaged for sale, complying with the demanding health standards, so it has no risk of consumption in terms of diseases or viruses.

A jar of coffee for hundreds of euros.

A kilogram of this coffee can cost up to €900, which has led to the creation of a fake Kopi Luwak market, where it is easy to find coffee beans falsely classified as Kopi, but they are either of another origin and claim to be Indonesian or simply another variety of coffee.

Some say that it is better to try it without knowing its process and origin, so that there is no prejudice in terms of taste and quality. You can find it right here or even in amazon, in different formats ans sizes.

Would you try something like this? Would you give it to someone without telling them what it is?
